Raffle Summary

Haggerston Mutual Aid are delighted to be partnering with The Barbary's Eyal Jagermann to offer you the chance to win a money-can't-buy private dining experience for four people. All proceeds will go towards our Haggerston Plates project which provides a healthy and delicious daily hot meal to around 200 people across Hackney who find themselves in a vulnerable position as a result of Covid-19. To date, we have already distributed over 5,000 meals and we're thrilled that Eyal has been volunteering his amazing culinary talent to help us out in the kitchen, alongside a host of other professional chefs. We are totally reliant on donations, whether it's funding, ingredients, spaces or time. We work with a changing and varied group – people in any situation, of any faith, or any background. Some are shielding, others are recovering from the illness or aren’t able to cook for themselves, many are experiencing financial difficulties – and all are in need of some neighbourly support. A significant proportion of those who are registered have been referred to us from other organisations in the area. These include councils, Women’s Aid, Age UK East London, the L&Q Housing Association, the Hackney Migrant Centre and some healthcare services. At £2 per head, a day's service costs £400. We need to keep going at the very least until mid-June, which is when the government instructed our at-risk neighbours to shield until, but our aim is to continue for as long as possible. A £10 ticket will pay for 5 meals. This support provides a lifeline for people struggling during these strange and unknowing times. Not only do we provide filling and nourishing food, for many of our recipients, the distanced catch up they have with the volunteers who deliver to their doorstep is their sole social interaction. To find out more about our work, follow us on Twitter or Instagram: @haggmutualaid. Thank you so much for any support you can offer – it's hugely appreciated. 1 Prize

  • The winner of this incredible prize will enjoy an intimate meal for four people, prepared and cooked by Eyal Jagermann, the original co-founder and head chef of Covent Garden restaurant, The Barbary. The lucky diners will be treated to Eyal’s distinct culinary genius, which honours the rich history, flavours and culture of the Middle East. Having grown up in Tel Aviv and worked in some of the city's finest restaurants, the celebrated chef moved to London in 2014 to study culinary management at Le Cordon Bleu, before joining the team at The Palomar. Later, Eyal dreamed up and honed the concept for The Barbary, which opened in Neal’s Yard in 2016. Described by food critic, Marina O’Loughlin, as ‘thrillingly alien’ in The Guardian, the restaurant received many plaudits, including TimeOut’s best restaurant in London for two years in a row. As Eyal moves to launch his next venture, ANAN, the successful entrant will be offered a foretaste of the vibrant new menu he will be bringing to the capital in the coming months. The restaurant will celebrate hummus as it is eaten in the Middle East – a balanced and nutritious meal enjoyed with fresh pitta and an array of small plates. ANAN means ‘cloud’ in both Arabic and Hebrew, which speaks to the fluffy texture Eyal will create using the finest chickpeas and tahini. The dishes will tell a story of the many deep-rooted cultures of the region through vegetables, fruits, herbs, grains and pulses combined with an inventive take on an ancient way of eating. ANAN launched in March with a very successful residency at Allpress Dalston Lane, and there are plans to open a permanent site as soon as circumstances allow. The dinner will be hosted in the tranquil surroundings of The White Gate in E2 – the gorgeous and green back garden of Haggerston Mutual Aid committee member, James Emtage. The setting will be familiar to many of our volunteers, as a cornerstone of our local efforts. For a time, while our meal delivery project was in between premises, the courtyard served as a distribution point. For five days, it was also home to four domestic microwaves, which had to be sourced to (frantically and rather comically!) heat up almost 1,000 meals donated by Queen Mary’s University. Don’t miss your chance to get a seat at the table for this memorable experience and support a vital cause! Terms and conditions: A date will be organised around the winner’s availability and the timing will be subject to compliance with government lockdown guidance. In the event of inclement weather, the garden offers a covered seating area. The menu will be designed to cater for any dietary requirements. Desserts, drinks and alcohol will be included.
