Raffle Summary

We're raising £85,000 to Help send Sarah to Germany for brain tumour cancer treatment. Help us to get life-saving cancer treatment for our amazing friend Sarah Pugh. We have all sorts of incredible prizes donated by the very many people who Sarah's life has touched. Please buy lots of tickets and spread the word! *If you don't live in the UK and win a physical prize we may ask you to contribute to postage :)* This site takes 10% of our winnings. Ideally someone can cover that so all of the money can go to Sarah. In November 2020, Sarah was diagnosed with a life-threatening grade 4 glioblastoma, a highly aggressive form of brain cancer. Even after surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy the tumour is likely to grow within months. We hope to access more progressive techniques in Germany that may help prolong Sarah's life and give her a few more years with her son. Sarah’s been one of Bristol's leading environmental and community organisers and teachers for over twenty years, designing and delivering hundreds of life-changing courses. She is one of the funniest and loveliest human beings you’ll ever meet - full of positive energy. Her inspiring, down to earth teaching has catalysed environmental action, community-building and positive culture change. With pioneering spirit, she initiated the Bristol Permaculture Group, Transition Bristol and Shift Bristol - leading its much loved Practical Sustainability Course. Most importantly, Sarah is mum to a brave and wonderful 12 year old son, whom she’s brought up single-handed. She says it’s hard to know which is more challenging - having a brain tumour or getting a 12 year old to do his homework! As some of you will know, last year, Sarah stepped out of co-ordinating Shift Bristol and started teaching online to make space to write her long-awaited book. The sudden onset of a life-threatening grade 4 glioblastoma brain tumour wasn’t exactly in the plan. The tumour severely affected her brain’s language centre and she needed urgent surgery. Sarah chose to have a waking craniotomy neurosurgery, so she was conscious and cracking jokes during the op. Although the surgery went well and resulted in an impressive 100% removal of the original tumour the glioblastoma will always re-seed into neighbouring cells, developing into a new tumour. Sarah has since undergone radiotherapy and several months of chemotherapy. So far she’s responded well, despite the ongoing fatigue. She’s radically adapted her diet and lifestyle with amazing help from herbalists, integrative practitioners and medical consultants, Vitamin, herbal and mushroom supplements are helping boost her immune system and combat side effects. She has slowly regained her ‘mum powers’ and is keeping the family together. She has had enormous support from friends, family and neighbours who've helped cook, walk the dog, and do shopping. They even helped move house. Doorstep visits and phone calls kept her spirits up through hair loss, fatigue and the shock and grief that comes with such a brutal re-assessment of life goals. Two amazing friends moved in temporarily to help look after the boy and the dog. However, the difficult truth is, despite lifestyle changes, and all the treatments, the prognosis for glioblastomas is bleak. At some point the tumour will regrow and possibly spread to other parts of the brain.. The 'median survival time' is devastatingly short – just 14-16 months. Only 25% of glioblastoma patients survive more than one year; 5% of patients survive for more than five years with only a tiny handful making it much beyond that. Survival rates here are below many other countries, and progressive treatments used elsewhere are unavailable. In the UK there is nothing beyond the standard treatments of chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy. The oncologists have often told Sarah that they don’t want to give her ‘false hope’. She’s had words with them about that! Whilst fully accepting that an untimely death is incredibly likely, she’s actively hoping to at least see her son through school. She's doing her best with what's in front of her. After much research and a recommendation from several people, including a long-term survivor, Sarah is keen to try immunotherapy, a progressive treatment that has shown very promising results. Germany is the nearest country to offer this, and it is widely used in the USA and other EU countries. The treatment creates a personalised vaccine made from the patient’s own immune cells to target and kill the cancer. Sarah likens this to sending her white blood cells to ninja training school and she loves the idea of her own system being instrumental in the fight. The vaccine is then administered at regular intervals over the next couple of years. While ultimately there is no ‘cure’, the treatment has shown significant increases in survival rates. All of Sarah’s work has been for passion and conviction, not for financial gain, so she isn’t in a position to afford this treatment. So we, her community, friends and family want to make sure she gets to Germany and has every weapon in her armoury to fight this thing off for as long as possible. Will you join us? Treatment for three years costs a minimum of £70,000, plus basic travel and accommodation. We are looking to raise £80,000 in total. Sarah and a helper will need to travel three or four times a year to Germany for the duration of the treatment. The initial treatment takes a week but after that, each trip is a couple of days. Any funds raised will be carefully and transparently managed by an independent team. If the treatment doesn’t work, any residual money will be donated to a similar fund. Please consider giving what you can. Thank you!

If you would like something similar or maybe something less ‘rustic’… that can be arranged. There will be an element of surprise to it owing to what wood I find at the time of making the table. All my wood is sourced locally from either my tree work or from my local sawmill and put together with traditional joints and lots of TLC.

  • Reduce the time spent watering plants to once a week or less by burying Olla Water in the soil next to your plants then fill with water. It will ensure that every drop is delivered direct to the roots while wasting very little to evaporation. You can extend the length of time between filling by applying a mulch around the plants and the neck of the Olla, this will reduce evaporation even further. The terracotta pot is fired to a low temperature which makes it porous, this allows water to seep slowly out of the pot and into the soil. As long as there is still water inside, soil moisture is maintained in a ring around the pot as far out as the pot is wide. The plants soon learn where the water is coming from and wrap their roots around the pot, taking a drink when they need it. However, when growing plants from seed or transplating seedlings, help them along with a bit of water onto the surface until their roots are more esablished. Perfect for large containers, greenhouses and raised beds. Fill each pot to the brim with water. The pot maintains consistent soil moisture over several days. Roots grow around the pot, drawing water through the terracotta when needed. Avoid damaging sensitive leaves while watering. Dormant weed seeds on the surface left undisturbed. Do not use with fertiliser as this will clog up the pores. Product Information: Height: 190mm Diametre: 90mm Weight: 240g Capacity: 800ml / 1.25 pint Material: Terracotta, unglazed

We have specials that change daily and a £6 lunch deal. Drinks-wise, the emphasis is on quality and range, with everything from real ales to cocktails available, all served by friendly, well-trained staff. The downstairs area hosts diners in the refectory style layout to the left of the bar and offers a more intimate social setting in the form of secluded booths to the right.

  • Shiatsu is a type of massage therapy that was primarily developed in Japan. With its name derived from the Japanese term for "finger pressure," it involves applying pressure to specific points on the body, moving from one point to another in a rhythmic sequence. As in acupressure, practitioners of shiatsu apply pressure to points on the body thought to be connected to pathways called "meridians".2 By stimulating these points, such therapists aim to promote the flow of vital energy (also known as "chi") and facilitate healing. According to the principles of TCM, blockages in the flow of chi can contribute to a wide range of illnesses.3 What Does Shiatsu Feel Like? When performing shiatsu, therapists apply deep pressure using their fingers, thumbs, and/or palms in a continuous sequence. The finger pads are used to apply pressure, and each point is typically held for two to eight seconds. In some cases, pressure points stimulated during shiatsu may feel tender but it should not hurt. People often describe this tenderness as "good pain." Shiatsu is typically done on a low massage table or on a mat on the floor. Although the sequence is often similar to other types of massage, no massage oil is used, so it is usually done with the client fully clothed in loose, comfortable clothing. Uses for Shiatsu Shiatsu is often used to lessen stress and protect against stress-related health issues. In addition, shiatsu is said to promote healing in conditions such as: Anxiety Arthritis Back pain Constipation Headache Insomnia Menstrual problems Neck and shoulder pain Premenstrual syndrome Sciatica Sinus problems Shiatsu is also said to increase energy, promote recovery from injuries, and stimulate the digestive system http://www.facebook.com/shiatsuwithgeorgina http://www.instagram.com/shiatsuwithgeorgina

He studied every aspect of beer, from how to grow all you need to make a pint to what flavours to look for when drinking a beer, how to tell the difference between a porter and a stout and how to tell the differences between all the hops from taste alone. Traditionally, this book would be described as a non-fiction guide to beer, but Andy would describe it as a love story between him and his favourite drink.

  • My hand-knitted socks and scarves take me a couple of weeks to knit and usually go for £35 or more. I use a mixture of needle sizes (2mm to 3mm) to get a good fit with the socks, which I knit to the size of your feet and ankle width. I’ve got a couple of great stitch patterns to help cling and increase robustness around the heels. I usually knit in the calf-length socks in wool with 25% nylon to give good wear (otherwise they will go at the toe and heel in no time), or bamboo. The scarves are knitted to a gorgeous design, which is pretty gender neutral. I knit them in either in 100% silk or bamboo.
