Raffle Summary

This year, once again the NAS has taken the opportunity to move its conference online and to create a special international event. We have therefore once again moved our famous raffle online too with some great prizes from our friends and sponsors! This year's raffle is raising money to help conserve objects at risk of being lost on the wreck of the London in the Thames Estuary as part of the Save The London campaign. Last year you raised over £1000 which has been used to support efforts to save artefacts from destruction in the Thames. You can find out more about the campaign and the work of the NAS and the volunteer divers from the London Shipwreck Trust here: https://www.nauticalarchaeologysociety.org/Appeal/save-the-london

  • "Marine activities are not only classic examples around which itemised terminology and particular terms for specific activities have evolved, but a huge amount of the English language and vocabulary has derived from, and is indebted to, historical maritime endeavours over centuries of seafaring. This book has evolved from a basic set of lecture handouts, into this illustrated glossary of terminology. It is intended to be used as a quick reference guide for anyone interested in marine activities, and wooden ships & boats in particular. • During the Second World War the Royal Navy’s flotillas of small, fast and powerfully armed motor gun boats (MGBs) were looked upon as the ‘Spitfires of the seas’. Operating from their harbour bases around the south and east coasts of England, RN Coastal Forces crews would set out under cover of darkness to look for trouble with German shipping in the Channel and the North Sea. The centrepiece of this manual is MGB 81, a combat veteran that saw repeated action between 1942 and 1945 in the North Sea and English Channel, including on D-Day. Her fighting career, restoration and recent rebuild are all covered in this fascinating insight into the only operational example of an RN Coastal Forces MGB of the Second World War. Authors: Diggory Rose is Director of Marine Operations at Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust and primary skipper of MGB 81. Stephen Fisher is an archaeologist and historian who specialises in maritime and amphibious warfare in the First and Second World Wars.
