The Sheffield Steelers would like to ask, once again for your help. Martin Latal joined the club last summer and in his short time here has become a crowd favourite with his outstanding speed and skill. Martin also has become one of the great characters of our side with his funny comments, his Borat impression, and his general pranks around the team. There is another side of Martin and his family that we wish to share with you. Martin’s wife Iryna is Ukrainian, and her family have been involved in the terrible events taking place in her Country over the past two weeks. Members of her family have had to flee from Ukraine following the bombing of their homeland and have fled to the Latal’s family hometown of Mlada Boleslav In all, 11 family members have managed to reach Mlada Bolesla with no money or food and only a couple of bags between them. Martin has taken on the responsibility of looking after his wife’s family and has rented an apartment, paid for clothes food and heating without asking for anything in return. When the Steelers became aware of this situation, we approached Martin to ask if we could collectively help by trying to raise some much needed funds to pay for their immediate care and future requirements. So, the club has decided to raffle off Martin’s white, away shirt from this weekend’s games in Belfast with all of the funds raised from the raffle being donated to Martin and his family. The raffle will run until 9.00pm on Tuesday evening. The winner of the raffle will also receive tickets to our next home game against Manchester Storm on the 27th March where Martin will present you his shirt on the ice after the game. Sheffield, the Latal family need the help of Hockey’s biggest family at this terrible time. We hope that once again we can ask for your support.
