Marlas Greenspace is a community group of residents in North Cornelly, Bridgend. We approached our landlord, Valleys To Coast, with an idea to make better use of an under-utilised space, turning it into a community friendly area – incorporating elements of natural play that is encouraging residents of all ages to come outside. We are supported and mentored by Wild Spirit Consultants, Llais y Goedwig, Valleys to Coast and Cornelly Community Council to produce a robust project plan that is influencing a number of stakeholders’ and partnerships’ contributions, that has resulted in a resident led innovative project that is delivering measurable benefits to our community. Since forming in 2018, there has been a lot of progress from us at Marlas Greenspace with the help of volunteers within the community. From 2018 to the present day we have been awarded the Outstanding Contribution to the Community Local Hero award, the Majors Citizenship Award and TPAS Cymru Participation Awards Winner. After being allowed to turn an under-utilised space into a community friendly area successfully, Marlas Greenspaces has been given the extra responsibility to transform further under-utilised areas from a wasteland to a community friendly Greenspace. We have a fenced compound in Cornelly for our storage supported by the National Lottery grant and are in the process of turning it into a work safe area for all. To enable the community group to continue this work, we depend on kind donations from local businesses and organisations. Trapp Fishery have been incredibly generous and donated this weekend break to raise money for our community group.
