-- THE SHORT -- We're hosting this raffle as part of a fundraising scheme to buy (and save) our beloved village pub, The George. Prizes include; one-night Peak District stay, a flight experience, a meal for two with wine, a Highland Cow experience, and more! -- THE LONG -- BY GEORGE! The George inn has been opening its doors to the community in the small village of Alstonefield in Staffordshire for over three hundred years. A short-lived attempt to transform it into beer-free, up-market, fine dining destination failed. It briefly closed whilst the draught beer pipework was reinstalled and Marston’s once more began to run it as a simple country pub. But the writing on the wall is very clear – Marston’s intends to sell it. The village has listed it as an Asset of Community Value and formed a Community Benefit Society registered with the Financial Conduct Authority. We now have until November to come up with the money to buy it and put it back into the heart of the village and run it as a community pub. But The George is a lot more than just a village pub. Sitting at the heart of one of the prettiest villages in The Peak District, for many, many years it has been a famous draw for the thousands of visitors (Prince Charles popped in for lunch when he came to speak with local farmers) who pour into the National Park. And they come not just in the summer months but throughout the year. Having a thriving pub at its heart plays an important role in filling the many holiday lets, B&Bs, campsites and a youth hostel. And the knock-on effect also helps attract customers to businesses in neighbouring villages. However, The George’s beating heart is as a village pub. Many new villagers chose to make Alstonefield as their home because the village had a pub. A place where everybody knows your name and where everybody (and their dog) is welcome. Over the last twenty years, the village has lost its tea rooms, its shop and its post office. Now, it could lose its pub. If it loses that it will lose another piece of its heart. Please help us save it.

Stay in one of two stylish and cosy shepherds huts in Alstonefield (Peak District). Our little Shepherds hut is situated in a private spot with views out across the valley, equipped with a full size double bed, kitchen and dining area and a little wood burning stove to keep you warm on chilly nights. The Hut is a cosy retreat with an additional outdoor cooking and dining space for warm summer evenings. The hut is located less than 40 yrds from our site facilities while remaining in a secluded location. There is also a welcome hamper on arrival to make your stay even more enjoyable! Smithyfields Campsite is a small adult only camping site with a quiet and relaxing atmosphere, the site offers different size pitches depending on your camping requirements aswell as toilets and 'hot' shower facilities and a chemical disposal point. We don't take groups as we try to maintain our quiet site camping. Booking details will be shared with the winner once the raffle has ended. If the winner does not wish to redeem this offer, you can speak to the campsite owners about re-gifting or using the value towards a different stay.
