The fighting was intense, the injuries savage, the casualties heavy with treatment and love given in appalling conditions. Young men died as soldiers. Young women died nursing them. They witnessed horrors, both. Nellie Spindler, one such nurse, arrived in France in May 1917 having disguised her true age to do so. She died 21 August the same year, in the arms of a fellow nurse, when her CCS was involved in the fighting. She is the only woman who rests buried among 10,000 men in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery in Belgium. This is a tribute to soldiers lost, to soldiers saved sewn together and to those holding the thread in their hands mending flesh, minds and saving lives. We remember the dead.
