Sweepstake Summary

Tribute Poppy Made by soldiers in Ypres, Flanders - World War I. Given to a Casualty Clearing Station (CCS) as a thank you to the staff, especially to the nurses, who worked tirelessly to save their lives. Paper. Blood. Cork. Black Silk. Gauze. Unimaginable war. The fighting was intense, the injuries savage, the casualties heavy with treatment and love given in appalling conditions. Young men died as soldiers. Young women died nursing them. They witnessed horrors, both. Nellie Spindler, one such nurse, arrived in France in May 1917 having disguised her true age to do so. She died 21 August the same year, in the arms of a fellow nurse, when her CCS was involved in the fighting. She is the only woman who rests buried among 10,000 men in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery in Belgium. This is a tribute to soldiers lost, to soldiers saved sewn together and to those holding the thread in their hands mending flesh, minds and saving lives. We remember the dead. We have maybe forgotten the wounded. Forgotten those who cared for them then and forgotten the carers now who kindly tend the wounded in war, the sick in peace, provide care in death and with love. We thank You This is a fabricated and fictional account, yet an account based in fact. Winner also receives a letter written by the soldiers to the nurses who cared for them, and may choose to share/publish the contents after draw.
