It exists to improve the health and well-being of children and young people in the North East from birth to age 18 by making serious stuff fun!  Set up in 1990 at a time when the North East had the worst levels of child health in the country their 'Yellow Brick Road Appeal' raised £12M to build The Sir James Spence Institute of Child Health at the RVI, a home for research into childhood ill –health, a building they gifted to the NHS. The Children's Foundation want to ensure that children and young people are happy and healthy. They feel loved, are respected, are given a voice and are heard  Some of their main projects include: The Clown Doctors – providing children with vital therapeutic play, relieving distress and anxiety during their treatment and stay in hospital and in hospices.  Nurture Project – providing a safe space in schools and the community for isolated young people to find a voice, grow in confidence and build positive friendships.  Therapeutic Horticulture – establishing garden projects in schools and the community so support and tuition can be given to disadvantaged and marginalised young people. Offering a level 1 qualification in Practical Horticulture.  Fuzzy Subjects - Emotional well-being workshops, engaging children and young people in schools and community groups on the subject of mental health and wellbeing. Increasing resilience in young people.  Food and Fun Activity Packs – providing vulnerable families and their children with weekend food provision and activities/resources that encourage play, learning and quality family time.  Couch to 2K – supporting young people through weekly running groups in the community to become more active, less isolated and improve their well-being.  Holiday trips and activities – enabling young people to feel les isolated, try new things, make new friends.
