When I was diagnosed with HIV, I was so afraid, not afraid of the virus but more afraid of the stigma attached to the virus. The world can be a cruel cruel place at times and anyone living with HIV will tell you that there is so so much work to do in order to stamp out the stigma that surrounds HIV & AIDS. Living with HIV is very different to how it was in the 1980's - we have come such a long way since then and its so so important to highlight this. Anyone on effective medication and living with HIV in 2021 will live a normal life. You can go about your day as you would normally! Amazing right?! The medication is so amazing that In 2019, the findings of the landmark PARTNER study proved that when a person living with HIV is on effective medication with an undetectable viral load, they cannot pass on HIV to their sexual partners. Undetectable = Untransmittable(U=U). The National AIDS trust do amazing things to help anyone living with HIV & AIDS but also support people who are struggling to come to terms with what the diagnosis means for a loved one. They offer financial support, they support people in the workplace and they offer education to those affected by HIV & AIDS. The work they do is crucial to ensure no one has to feel alone when dealing with HIV & AIDS but also to ensure no one takes their own life because of the stigma that surrounds HIV & AIDS.
