Raffle Summary

This is a rare original 1901 Penny Dreadful Ghost made as part of the batch of 50 in January 2021, five were retained for the merchants. Our first batch of forty 1900 Penny Dreadfuls were released online and in the shop in October 2020. Due to the third lockdown the batch of 1901 Penny Dreadfuls was sold from our website shop(s) only. The Penny Dreadful takes its name from the cheap popular serial pieces of literature of the nineteenth century which were published in weekly parts, each costing one penny. The subject matter of these stories was typically sensational, focusing on the exploits of criminals, or supernatural entities. The body is a polished ebony-black which is lightly veiled with a dim grey. Some veils were more prominent than others as is the nature of a handmade veiled Ghost. In the base of each Ghost lies a 1901 brass penny, the pennies are all 122 years old and hold marks and history of their own. The coins were minted in the year of Queen Victorias death they have passed through the hands of many, the imagined stories are preserved in these Ghosts for good. The 1901 Penny Dreadful edition was released on the 120th anniversary of the death of Queen Victoria. We are raising money this month in support of a charity named DEBRA. DEBRA UK exists to provide care and support to improve quality of life for people living with EB, and to fund pioneering research to find effective treatments and, ultimately cure(s). Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is the name for a group of painful genetic skin conditions that cause the skin to become very fragile and tear or blister at the slightest touch. The name comes from ‘epiderm’ - the outer layer of skin, ‘lysis’ - the breakdown of cells and ‘bullosa’ - blisters. We have had the privilege of meeting some people with the condition and the evident pain and suffering which the disease inflicts is brutal. Anyone who comes into contact with a person who suffers with EB cannot help but be touched by their bravery as daily life is endured in constant pain and discomfort. There is currently no known cure for EB but there are treatments aimed at helping alleviate some of the debilitating symptoms. At DEBRA UK, work is focused on funding research to find new treatments and a cure, as well as providing support to people living with EB to enhance their quality of life through improved healthcare, access to information and respite care. There has been tremendous support for our first two Monthly Charity Ghosts and we thank everyone who has purchased a ticket thus far. Wishing you good fortune & fortitude. The Raffall is open to customers overseas.
